Pirates of the Caribbean: what order to watch the movies in
Short answer: for Pirates of the Caribbean, release order is story order — no chronological traps. The one rule to respect: films 2 and 3 form an inseparable two-parter, and everything starts with The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003).
Here are the details, with what each film assumes you have seen, and where the sixth one stands.

Unlike Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings, there is no alternative order: no prequel, no hidden chronology. The saga is watched exactly as it was released.
The original trilogy (2003-2007): one single story
The Curse of the Black Pearl works perfectly on its own — it is the most self-contained film of the saga, and its best. But Dead Man's Chest and At World's End were shot together and tell one story cut in two: film 2 ends on a full cliffhanger, film 3 picks up the very next scene. Watching them weeks apart is the surest way to get lost in the alliances (who is betraying whom being the main sport of those two films).
The two sequels: almost independent
- **On Stranger Tides (2011)** starts fresh: new plot, new characters (Blackbeard, Angelica), no more Will or Elizabeth. It is the most watchable in isolation after the first film — all it assumes is that you know Jack Sparrow and Barbossa.
- **Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), on the contrary, reopens the trilogy's files: Jack's past, Will's fate, and a hero who is Will and Elizabeth's son**. Watching it without the trilogy means missing everything that gives it weight.
What about the sixth film?
It has been announced for years, but as of summer 2026 there is still no finished script, no cast, no date. Disney is actually developing two projects in parallel — a reboot and a film led by Margot Robbie — and producer Jerry Bruckheimer keeps saying Johnny Depp is "in talks", his return depending on the script. In other words: the five current films are the complete catalogue for a good while yet.
The most common mistakes
- Watching film 2 without going straight into film 3. It is one film in two parts: the Dead Man's Chest cliffhanger only makes sense resolved immediately.
- Assuming On Stranger Tides continues the trilogy. It starts a brand-new plot — do not look for Will and Elizabeth, they are not in it.
- Starting with Dead Men Tell No Tales because it is the most recent: it is the one that assumes the most prior viewing.
- Waiting for number 6 to get started. Given the state of the project, the current saga stands on its own — and wraps up properly in five films.
Know the saga? Prove it
Knowing the order of the films is one thing. Being able to put the events of the saga in order is quite another — and between the curses, betrayals and resurrections, it is much harder.
