Harry Potter: what order to watch the films and read the books

Short answer: for a first watch, follow the release order of the 8 films, from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) to Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011). Save the Fantastic Beasts films for afterwards, even though their story happens sixty years earlier.

Here is the full picture, including the internal chronology of the wizarding world — which does not match the order the films came out at all.

The 8 Harry Potter films in order

Good news: for the main saga, release order and chronological order are the same. Each film covers one school year at Hogwarts, in sequence. There is no trap.

If you grew up in the United States, film 1 is the one you know as Sorcerer's Stone — same film, different title.

The 7 books in order

Why 7 books but 8 films?

Because the last novel was split in two. Deathly Hallows is by far the densest book in the series, and the studio chose two two-hour films over a single one that would have compressed everything. The cut falls halfway through the book, right after a pivotal moment at Malfoy Manor.

The full wizarding world timeline

If you want the story in the order it happens rather than the order it was released, the Fantastic Beasts films slot in before Harry is even born.

A useful anchor: Harry is born in 1980, starts at Hogwarts in 1991, and the Battle of Hogwarts takes place in May 1998. The Deathly Hallows epilogue jumps nineteen years ahead, landing in 2017 — exactly where The Cursed Child picks up.

Release order or chronological order?

For a first time, take release order. The Fantastic Beasts films are written assuming you already know who Dumbledore and Grindelwald are, what Hogwarts represents, and why the wizarding world hides from Muggles. Starting there costs you half the payoff — and spoils several reveals from the main saga.

Chronological order is a rewatch. It becomes interesting once you know the story: seeing Grindelwald's rise before Voldemort's casts Dumbledore's choices in a different light.

What about The Cursed Child?

It is neither a film nor a novel: it is a stage play, first staged in London in 2016 and published as a script. It resumes at the exact moment of the epilogue and follows Albus, Harry's son. Save it for the very end — it only makes sense once all seven books are behind you.

The most common mistakes

• Thinking there are 7 films. There are 8, because the last book was split.
• Starting with Fantastic Beasts because "it's the prequel". That is the surest way to ruin both sagas at once.
• Skipping Order of the Phoenix, often called the slowest. It is where the whole final act is set up.
• Watching Deathly Hallows Part 2 without Part 1. The film opens mid-scene: these are two halves of one film, not two episodes.

Know the saga? Prove it
